Obituary for Harald “BUD” Friele
Obituary for Harald “BUD” Friele
Harald Berle “Bud” Friele passed away on November 21st, 2018 in the comfort of his own home on Salt Spring Island. Bud was born October 9, 1921 in Oslo, Norway, the eldest son of Haakon and Aslaug Friele, and brother to Ted and Rolf. He took great pride in his heritage, and always flew a Norwegian flag along with his Canadian flag.
Bud lived his life with a strong sense of family, adventure, humour, creativity, and curiosity. Although he always kept Norway near and dear to his heart, Bud spent most of his younger years residing in the Seattle area. He proudly served in the US Navy during WWII as Captain of the USS Vent, patrolling the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Bud was well known in the salmon industry, having fished and operated canneries in Alaska for many years. He later became President and General Manager of the Nakat Packing Corporation for A&P before retiring to Salt Spring Island. The sea was always a priority in Bud’s life. From his extensive career in the Alaskan salmon industry to spending time on his boat, “The Royal Viking,” Bud was happiest when out on the water. He could often be found prawning in the local waters, eating raw oysters off the beach, and making his specialty, Gravlax. Bud was also an avid skier, hiker, photographer, and gardener who recently returned home from the Fall Fair with a first place trophy for his grapes. He enjoyed spending time in his workshop, engineering new and ingenious ways to build or repair almost anything, and was known to be the best knife sharpener around. His most recent pastime found him creating perfectly balanced driftwood mobiles which he would give to grateful friends and family.
Bud was deeply loved and cherished by his three devoted wives, Katherine Brazeau, Evelyn Mouat, and Patricia Dougan, all of whom predeceased him. He leaves behind his five daughters and two step daughters: Kathy Fontenot (Don), Barb Lorenson (Stan), Christy Lein (Gary), Shelley Maxwell (Ron), Kari Holmes (Rob), Aileen Dougan (Craig), and Leanne Stegall (Bill). He was also the treasured “Bestefar” to eleven grandchildren and “Oldefar” to eight great grandchildren. Additionally left behind are Bud’s younger brother Ted Friele (Patty), Bev Brazeau, and the Pringle and Mouat families. Bud’s longevity was due in part to his long time friend, David Davies, and to the wonderful care he received over the years from Dr. Reznick, Dr. Woodley, and the staff at Lady Minto Hospital.
Bud wishes that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Lady Minto Hospital in Ganges.

Obituary for Ingrid Johanna Potts
Obituary for Ingrid Johanna Potts
Ingrid began her life January 22, 1944 in Palo Alto, California, the only daughter of Norwegian parents Ruth and Paul Todsen. She attended Stanford Elementary and Wilbur Junior High before graduating from Palo Alto High School in 1961. Ingrid then received an Associate's Degree in business from Foothill College and began working for the USGS in Menlo Park.

In 1964, Ingrid married her Junior High School sweetheart, John Potts, and they moved less than a mile away from her childhood home to begin what would be a 52-year marriage. A year later the couple bought their first home in Mountain View and embarked on long cross country flying adventures with John as pilot.

Children came next, with daughter Lani Ruth born in 1969 followed by son Keith Paul in 1971. The whole family relocated 300 miles north to Shingletown, CA in 1979 where Ingrid enjoyed having wide open space and fresh air to take long walks and work in the garden. She also took to the skies again, flying with John across the country and to Alaska in a classic Cessna 170.

She began working temporarily as a Special Education Teacher's Aide at Black Butte Elementary School and ended up staying for 21 years until her retirement in 2003.

Ingrid always collected penguin figures, and in 2000 finally got the chance to see them in the wild on the beaches of New Zealand. That same year she participated in a family reunion in Norway and became reacquainted with the people and places of her history.

Ingrid and John sold their house in 2004, bought a motor home and began traveling the country as full-time RV'ers, continuing their lifelong love of travel and camping.

In 2005, Ingrid suffered a disabling stroke and she moved with John to a small house in Redding to be near medical care.

John took care of Ingrid for 10 years before she moved to a nursing facility in 2015. She died peacefully at 8:50am on Monday, May 22, 2017.

Ingrid is survived by her loving husband John Potts, her daughter Lani Potts of San Jose and her son Keith Potts, daughter-in-law Tuli Potts and granddaughters Jessa and Mia Potts of Mount Shasta, CA.

Obituary Lois Audrey (Klahn) Bakker 1928–2017
Obituary Lois Audrey (Klahn) Bakker 1928–2017
Lois A. Bakker, 88, passed away of age-related causes on January 6, 2017, at Highland Court Memory Care in Port Angeles, surrounded by family members.

Lois was born on September 20, 1928, in Forks to Agatha “Aggie” (Krogh) and M.E. “Pat” Klahn, the second child of four children.

She attended Quillayute Valley High School in Forks, choosing to leave in her junior year to marry Francis “Frank” Peregrin, USN, who was stationed at Quillayute Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Washington. Their marriage, later ending in divorce, produced two children: Diana and Michael.

The Navy transferred Frank to California for a period of time. After his discharge, he and Lois moved back to Forks because Lois very much missed her small town, family, and friends. In Forks, she was employed for several years at both the Olympic Theatre and Olympic Pharmacy.

Lois remarried in 1965 to Donald Bakker, a Washington state wildlife agent stationed in Forks at that time. In 1965, Don was transferred to Port Angeles, where he and Lois made their home and Don finished his career, retiring from the state of Washington. Two daughters were born during that time: Nancy and Kimberly.

After Nancy and Kimberly were born, Lois spent the rest of her life as a wife and homemaker, raising Nancy and Kimberly, and then became their children’s day care provider. She very much enjoyed this time in her life, being a “loving, caring grandmother” to them.

When Don passed away in September of 1989, Lois joined Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County. Her decision was influenced by the wonderful care provided by Volunteer Hospice for Don during his terminal illness. She was very dedicated, volunteering every Thursday in the office, answering phones and writing thank-you notes to donors. She “retired” from VHCC after 21 years of continuous weekly volunteering.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, “Pat” and “Aggie.” She is survived by her brother, Darrel (Karlina) Klahn of Oregon City, Oregon; and twin sisters Arlene Goforth of Red Bluff, California, and Darlene (Jim) Croft of Bellevue, Washington.

She is also survived by her four children: Diana (Mark) Schildknecht of Sequim, Michael (Karen) Peregrin of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Nancy (Gary) Southard and Kimberly (Christopher) Burns of Port Angeles. Lois’ extended family includes 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

At her request, there will be no public service. A private family service and burial will be held at a later date in the Klahn area of the Forks Cemetery.

She had requested that any donations be made to Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, 540 East Eighth Street, Port Angeles, WA 98362.
